When you need a map, hire a cartographer. Our local fixer did a good job of tracking down a cartographer-cum-illustrator in rural Myanmar to help the team on our final report. We never know quite what skills will be available in-field, so ultimately how do you set the team up to have a higher probability of serendipitous encounters? And how to set up a popup studio so that it can meaningfully accommodate new people? I’ve been running popup studios for about a decade and each one is a little different, ideally a reflection of it’s locale. It’s not the right approach for every project, but it surprises me how little people think about their working environment, and how accepting they are of the boring-as-fuck corporate status quo.
